Rosetta Philae Sampling Drilling and Distribution Subsystem: Operation and Results from the First On

06 Dec 2015   08:15-09:15

The presentation will describe the operation of the sampler, drill and distribution (SD2) subsystem onboard the lander Philae of Rosetta mission. Rosetta reached the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014 and released its lander Philae on the comet surface on November 12, 2014 for in-situ investigation. SD2 is devoted to soil drilling, samples collection, and their distribution to three scientific instruments. Philae?s landing was not nominal and SD2 was operated in unexpected conditions: the lander was not anchored to the soil and leant on the comet surface shakily. Nevertheless, one sampling procedure was attempted. The presentation provides an overview of SD2 on-comet activities and analyses SD2 achievements during the first phase of Philae?s on-comet operations.
