Prof. Dalibor Štys - MICROSCOPE AS INFORMATION CHANNEL

14.05.2013   14:30

Abstract: Microscopic image of colorless objects is a result of combination of diffraction of light at the observed object and its interference along the light trajectory. The important plane at which highest electrical field intensity is achieved is called the focal plane, but interference image is formed at all positions along the light path. Proper description of image formation is possible only for separate light sources and simple structures.
In the case of relatively thick transparent objects such as living cells or sections of plastic material, we observe the diffraction pattern of all objects projected to the objective lense from many points in the image, some of them "acceptably" sharp, other highly distorted. The image is then result of mixed contributions of images from different planes. Moreover, images are captured by digital cameras. Instead of trying to restore the original object, we describe the image as information about it.
We have introduced several image variables to classify the information about the object based on the assumption of multifractality of self-organised systems. Finally, the working results from will be shown which illustrate how to objectively find physical borders of object images.
