prof. Martin Margala: Ballistic Electronics in 2-D Structures- From Silicon to III-V, Graphene and Beyond

Abstract: As the shrinking of transistor dimensions continues and classical barriers are being reached, device and circuit designers are entering an era of true nanoscale where new transport phenomena start to make an impact. Several efforts are being pursued to discover which material and which technology will be able to deliver same benefits that we got addicted to from silicon. This talk will summarize recent experiments and progress in various material systems and their potential promise.

Bio: Dr. Martin Margala is 2015-16 Fulbright Distinguished Chair of Electrical Engineering. He has been Department Chair of ECE at the University of Massachusetts Lowell since 2011. He completed his PhD in 1998 at the University of Alberta, Canada. He has published over 40 journal papers and close to 150 conference papers. His work has been funded by National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Science and Research, and Army Research Office. He has collaborated with many leading semiconductor companies including Intel, HP, Maxim, Raytheon, BAE, Altera among others. His main research interests are Ballistic Circuit Design, Terahertz Speed Computation, Heterogeneous Computing and Design for Reliability.
