Profesorská přednáška (Ing. Josef Šivic, PhD. – CIIRC ČVUT)

11.02.2026   13:00-14:00

Profesorská přednáška před vědeckou radou fakulty na téma: Automatické vizuální rozpoznávání: od pixelů ke strojům, které vidí / Automatic visual recognition: from pixels to machines that can see.

Abstrakt:
Building machines that understand complex visual inputs is one of the central problems in artificial intelligence, with applications in autonomous robotics, manufacturing, and healthcare. While artificial intelligence has made major progress in processing language and 2D images, the real world is three-dimensional, dynamic, and governed by physics. In this talk, I will argue that the next frontier of computer vision is embodied perception—creating machines that learn to perceive, reason, and act by observing the world. I will present our recent contributions in this area. First, I will show our progress towards using millions of instructional "how-to" videos to teach robots manipulation skills with minimal human supervision. Second, I will show our steps towards visual representations that incorporate geometric and physical constraints to ensure robots understand 3D motion and forces. Finally, I will demonstrate how these learning techniques can be adapted to "see" and engineer biomolecular structures, enabling us to predict the effects of mutations on protein-protein interactions—a tool that may assist in the discovery of treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and stroke. Ultimately, I will discuss how federating these experiences across many systems can lead to a new generation of autonomous assistants that truly understand the nature of our world.
