INTEGRATED SENSORS IN LAB-ON-CHIP PLATFORMS FOR CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract:
Microfluidic lab-on-chip sensing platforms are currently being intensively studied for detection of bioanalytes (such as DNA, proteins, cells, metabolic products) in applications such as food safety, health monitoring and environmental control. These miniaturized analytical systems have compelling potential advantages, such as portability, speed, sensitivity, small dimension, low energy consumption, multiplexing, no need for highly skilled operators or laboratory infrastructure, and low cost.
To take full advantage of the miniaturization of the biosensor, it is crucial to integrate on-chip transducer integration – in our case mainly thin-film silicon photosensors, but also microelectrode arrays and thin-film silicon MEMS. I will present several applications we are working on as case studies of lab-on-a-chip analytical systems – which will include DNA, proteins and small molecule detection - with integrated transducers and will discuss issues of sensitivity and systems design.
